Support for Learning
I am Margaret Somers, the Curriculum Leader for Support for Learning at Coatbridge College. Along with most of our staff, I have been working at the College for many years. Our section provides a range of programmes to meet the various needs of our students with additional support needs, including those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health problems, hearing or visual impairment.
We offer courses, both full and part time, delivered by enthusiastic and engaging staff, who aim to build confidence, provide useful life skills and develop independence. All full time students have a tutor who will help them to realise their goals through personal development plans. There are usually no entry requirements to our courses, but we like to meet potential students before deciding what course would be the most suitable for them.
We also offer the HNC in Additional Support Needs on a part time basis for those who are working with, or hope to work with, people who have additional needs.

Success Stories / Testimonials
I was made redundant a couple of years ago and wanted to come to College to start learning new skills. I started at Coatbridge College on the New Opportunities course and this year I joined the Employability Course. It’s hard work but interesting because the things I’m learning, like first aid, are going to be useful to me. As part of the course, I go to a placement two days a week and I’m really enjoying it.
I work in Farmfoods learning about retail. The staff are really nice and supportive and I’d love to get a job there!
Coming to College has definitely increased my confidence and helped me become a more independent person.
