Student Counsellor
We offer a free and confidential counselling service to students.Some students have problems which lead to an acute crisis, or have problems that have been there for some time. The aim of counselling is to help you work with a problem that is causing you to feel distressed, unhappy or anxious. It can enable you to reach a greater understanding of yourself and your situation by exploring the issues together with your counsellor.
What Happens Next?
If you decide you want to arrange an appointment, make a visit to Student Services in G5, we will make an appointment with a counsellor for you. Alternatively, you can call us on 01236 436000. You will not be asked why you wish to meet with the Counsellor and all meetings are confidential.What Do I Do Then?
Simply turn up to meet with the Counsellor at your first agreed appointment time and any sessions that follow.How many appointments will I have?
The number of sessions is between you and the Counsellor. We usually find that 4 or 5 sessions is enough for most students. Sessions last about 50 minutes and are usually at weekly intervals, but you might prefer a shorter or longer time.What is Counselling?

Our counsellors work with a Person Centred Approach and offer each client deep acceptance, understanding and a commitment to being in a genuine relationship.What can Counselling Offer?

Question: Can I make an appointment for someone else?Answer: Counselling is a process that involves talking about difficulties and problems that are very personal to the individual. To benefit from counselling, you must be willing to take part in that process yourself. We would always encourage you to contact us directly.
Question: Can I see someone now?
Answer: We try to offer a first appointment within 5 working days of you contacting us. We are unfortunately unable to offer drop-in sessions.
Question: What will happen if I miss my appointment?
Answer: Counselling appointments are a valuable resource and our aim is to make sure they are not wasted. If you cannot come to your appointment for any reason you should let us know 24 hours in advance. If you miss your appointment and fail to contact us, it may take several weeks before we can offer you another appointment.
