Caring College Celebrates | 01.07.10

Coatbridge College students and staff celebrated a successful year for Scottish Wider Access Programmes (SWAP), with three quarters of students on Health and Social Care SWAP courses heading to University.

The Health and Social Care department at Coatbridge College were elated with their Access to Nursing and Access to Social Sciences/Humanities students as they gathered to celebrate the successful completion of their courses over a buffet lunch and certificate presentation.

SWAP programmes, usually based in local colleges, are designed specifically for adults without the required entry qualifications for University. Dedicated staff at Coatbridge College provided students with guidance and support on taking the next step to higher education - with 24 of 32 from the cohort of students moving on to University next year.

Special Awards were also presented to the students who demonstrated the greatest commitment throughout their studies. These awards were presented to Graham Veldon from Access to Nursing and Suzanne Eadie from Access to Social Sciences/Humanities. Elizabeth Miller, Curriculum Leader for Health and Social Care at Coatbridge College, said:
‘SWAP programmes have helped many adults realise their potential and given them the confidence to succeed in College or University.

We are extremely proud of all of the students involved - they have shown a lot of hard work and dedication. We wish them every success in their future studies and careers’.

The department celebrated further as Introduction to Health and Social Care students were presented with Millennium Volunteers (MV) Awards for their outstanding contribution as volunteers. Emily Charnley, Natalie Linnen and Sarah Kelly Reid completed over 100 hours of voluntary work in line with Curriculum for Excellence as part of their course.

The MV Awards provide young volunteers between the ages of 16-25 the opportunity to gain nationally recognised certification for their voluntary work. With support from the Scottish Government, it is a national scheme delivered locally by the Volunteer Centre Network in partnership with Volunteer Development Scotland.
