What to do in an Emergency

Actions in the Event of a Fire

You should take time to read and understand the fire evacuation procedures. Fire action notices are posted throughout the college and display all of the information you need to know on how to raise the alarm and to get out of the College safely in the event of a fire  evacuation. You should always follow these instructions.

Always remember that you must not misuse anything provided for safety purposes i.e. fire alarms and fire extinguishers. Disciplinary action will be taken against anyone who interferes with these for no reason.

Evacuation of Students with a Disability

Anyone who needs assistance to evacuate should make their way to one of the  temporary waiting areas in the college or report to a Fire Marshal and you will be assisted to leave the building if required.

If you are located at Duart House, make your way to one of the temporary waiting areas located on all floor stairwells where you will be given help to leave the building.

Evacuation Plan

If you have not already done so, please let us know if you think you may have any special evacuation needs so that we can talk to you to see if you need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.

Accident and Incident Reporting

Any injuries or near misses that could have resulted in an injury must be reported to a member of College staff as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours. This will help us prevent the incident from happening again in the future.

Moving and Handling

handling items account for a large number of workplace injuries. Make sure you do not try to lift or move any heavy or awkward items unless you have been given appropriate training and instruction.

Using Electrical Equipment

In order to protect yourself and other College users from the dangers associated with faulty electrical equipment, you must not bring any portable electrical equipment into the College unless permission has been given and it has been inspected and tested by an authorised member of staff to ensure its safety.

Where you are required to operate any electrical equipment, you will be given suitable training and instruction in its safe use and you must operate it at all times in line with this training. You must not use any equipment that you have not been trained to use.

Specialist Areas

Certain areas in the College such as labs, auto workshops and hairdressing and beauty salons have special health and safety rules in order to make sure that everyone stays safe. For your own safety and that of others it is important that you follow these rules at all times and any failure to do so will result in you being excluded from that area.

Training will be given to you in order to ensure the safe use of any equipment and substances that are used in coursework. You must always use equipment in line with this training and you should report any problems to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Protective Equipment

Where it is necessary to use protective equipment to ensure that you are safe, you must use it in line with any training and instruction given. If you have any problems with protective equipment or if it appears to be damaged or faulty, you must report it to a member of staff as soon as possible. Refusal to use protective equipment will result in you being excluded from the area where it is needed.

Protective equipment must always be removed when using any common areas within the College in order not to contaminate others.

Dangerous Substances/Weapons

It is inappropriate to bring any dangerous substances, articles or weapons into the College environment under any circumstances. Any person found to be in possession of such items will be required to leave the College premises immediately. Depending on the circumstances of the event, the Police may need to be notified.
