Core Skills
Every student leaving Coatbridge College to start a new job or to join a course at University has something in common – they have all worked hard to develop their Core Skills.Employers often want more from their staff than practical ability. They need people who can communicate well, plan ahead and work as part of a team. They need people who can perform calculations and are able to analyse and solve everyday problems. Increasingly, they are looking for employees who are able to use computers and technology to do their job.
Here at Coatbridge College we’ll help you develop the skills you’ll need to succeed.
So What Are They?
There are five Core Skills:- Communication
- Numeracy
- Using Information Technology (IT)
- Working with Others
- Problem Solving
How Will They Be Taught?
All Core Skills are taught in line with your subject area.What Will I Be Expected To Do?
CommunicationCommunication involves reading, writing, talking and listening. Tasks can include summarising a piece of writing, taking part in group discussions or writing a report.
Numeracy
Numeracy has two main areas: understanding graphical information such as tables, charts or graphs and being able to solve problems by carrying out calculations.
Using Information Technology (IT)
You will learn how to use a computer safely as well as learning to use a range of software packages. For example, it could involve creating a poster or preparing a presentation, it could even mean recording a piece of music. You will also learn how to make the most of the Internet for research.
Working with Others
This subject is often taught as part of your course. It may be a project or a specific event where you and your classmates form your own team. You will learn how to plan and work effectively with other people as well as reviewing your own performance once the task is complete.
Problem Solving
Solving problems is part of everyday life. At College you will get the opportunity to learn how to analyse situations before planning a strategy for solving a problem. You can expect that the problems will be related to your course and may be activities you already take part in.
Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure Core Skills will play an important part. We are here to help you improve them.
