Bullying

Bullying in any shape or form – verbally, in writing or images, including through communication technology (cyber bullying, e.g. graffiti, text messaging, email or postings on websites), intimidation, violence, etc., is NOT acceptable.

If you are being bullied:

  • Try to stay calm and look as confident as you can.
  • Be firm and clear – if you feel confident enough, look the bully in the eye and tell them to stop.
  • Get away from the situation as quickly as possible.
  • Tell someone else about what is happening.

Bullying myths:

  • There’s no bullying here.
  • Bullying toughens you up.
  • Fight back and it will get better.
  • Ignore it and it will go away.
  • It is part of life and you just have to accept it.

Who to tell?

  • Talk to the person who is bullying/harassing you and ask them to stop.
  • Tell your class representative.
  • Talk to your Senior Lecturer.
  • Talk to your guidance tutor or a member of the Student Services Team.
  • Call the bullying helpline on 0800 441111.

Be clear about:

  • What has happened to you;
  • How often it has happened;
  • Who was involved;
  • Who saw what happened;
  • Where it happened; and
  • What you have done about it already.
Bullying can affect anyone, and all members of the College community have a responsibility to stop bullying and report any incidents they observe. Please remember that help is available and you don’t have to deal with bullying on your own.

The College will endeavour to ensure that all alleged instances of bullying will be dealt with swiftly.
