Campus Development
Coatbridge College Secures Funding for Campus Development
For several years we have strived to redevelop our College campus at Kildonan Street to benefit our current and future students, staff and the community. We were awarded £20 million recently to address the DDA issues of our campus and make our facilities more accessible. Construction work is due to commence in August 2009 and be completed by December 2010.How will the project improve facilities?
The main part of the project will address the access issues within the College, particularly, within the Main (south) building, where there are areas that those with mobility difficulties cannot access. It will involve some demolition of this building, the construction of new internal areas, floor levelling, installation of lifts and a full refurbishment. In addition, the yard between the south and north buildings will be enclosed in a courtyard / atrium, which will connect the two buildings. This will form the new entrances for the College from Park Street and Eglinton Street. This attractive central entrance area will contain excellent new facilities such as a coffee shop, seating areas and internet cafe. It will also give easy access to key areas such as Student Services and the Learner Resource Centre and lead to an external courtyard / performance area.
What impact will this have on the community?
We are delighted that our redevelopment will improve the facilities and opportunities for our neighbours and the wider community. All areas will be fully accessible and offer improved services and facilities. We hope that more people take up the opportunities available, whether it’s getting back to studying, taking leisure classes or dropping in for a coffee.
How will the work impact on College neighbours?
All of the work takes place within the College grounds; therefore it should not disrupt our neighbours due to its distance from local houses and careful consideration on how the work is performed. Also, by using our own north building and an off-site facility, we will minimise the modular accommodation onsite.
During the project we will lose some parking due to this accommodation and the contactor’s compound; however we will greatly decrease the number of cars coming to the College by taking many people off-site.
